Acne Medication – Are There Potential Side Effects?

People who have milder cases of acne need to be aware that it is possible to treat themselves rather than obtaining prescription creams. These remedies may include but are not limited to a change in diet and lifestyle, including exercise, stress prevention and personal hygiene. However, for some people, this will not be enough. In cases where the acne is slightly more severe, it may be beneficial to use prescription medication.

There are a select few types of medications which are the most common in the fight against acne, all of which have varying degrees for potential side effects. The medications in question usually come in the form of lotions, creams or gels. In the determination of whether prescription medication is needed, a dermatologist will study the severity of the skin disorder, the type of skin of the patient as well as the chances of side effects for the patient.

As already mentioned, it is common for some people with acne to have a reaction to the stronger forms of medication. The most prominent problem to occur is that the skin may actually become worse before it comes good which can often take up to two months of using medication. Additionally, other side effects that may become evident include peeling, soreness, a burning sensation and even discoloration of the skin. If any of these symptoms becomes increasingly worse or do not improve over time, this is usually an indication that its time for a change in medication.

As well as the creams already discussed, oral acne medications also have potential side effect implications. Some of the more common ones include dizziness and an upset stomach. Again, if these symptoms do arise and do not continue to improve, this is a sign that the medication needs to be changed and you should get in contact with your physician.

Like most medications, there are both benefits and risk associated with its use. Everybody is different and thus one person may react differently to medication than another person did.
